Welcome to the home page for the TCU Department of Physics and Astronomy
REU program in Physics and Astrophysics.

Download our 2008 flyer (PDF)!

This TCU REU program is an NSF sponsored program.  The renewal proposal for the program is currently under review by NSF and we hope to hear in Spring 2008 that the program will be continued through 2010.   We are looking forward to hosting seven students the summer of 2008!

Students accepted to the program will participate in a 10-week program doing research together with TCU faculty and students in experimental and/or theoretical research projects in areas such as

  • nano-scale physics and materials science
  • surface science
  • atomic and molecular physics
  • optical and laser physics
  • astrophysics and space science

Students will do their projects in collaboration with TCU faculty, postdoc researchers, graduate and undergraduate students.

Student Benefits

In addition to the extraordinary learning that will result from undertaking a research project and interacting with other TCU researchers and REU participants, students will benefit from:

  • summer stipends of $4,000
  • paid housing (new on-campus residential halls, furnished room suites)
  • paid round-trip travel expenses to TCU
  • full access to extensive campus resources (excellent library, new recreational center...)
  • a variety of programmed supplementary activities (field trips, talks, presentations...)

Requirements and Qualifications

Successful applicants will have good grades, the willingness to work hard, and an interest in science and in research. Students must be majoring in the physical sciences or engineering and must have completed at least one year of physics courses. Participants must be U. S. citizens or permanent residents.

Recruitment Philosophy

While the program will be advertised nationally, we are planning to specifically focus our REU student recruitment efforts in order to strongly encourage and subsequently support students from underrepresented groups (women, minorities, etc..).
