Space Junk - How I Learned to Make a Living From
Someone Else's Trash

Abstract: Since the launch of Sputnik in 1957, humans have launched tens of thousands of objects into Earth orbit. Many of these have orbit lifetimes measured in centuries, so the continuing accumulation of space debris will pose problems for the commercial, scientific, military, and other uses of space for the foreseeable future. The Orbital Debris Program at NASA Johnson Space Center, along with other research groups around the world, are dedicated to understanding the potential risks of the current environment and developing procedures and techniques to mitigate the long-term consequences of our actions today in order to preserve the space environment for future generations.
